Seating chart maker
Drag students onto desks, shape the room, randomise with rules and print the chart. Names stay on your computer and the chart is saved there for next time.
How to use it
- Paste your class list, set the rows and columns, and pick a room shape or tap “Shape the room” to turn cells into desks or gaps.
- Drag each name onto a desk, or tap a name and then a desk. Or press Randomise everyone, with keep-apart pairs and front-row needs if you have them.
- Press Print the chart for a landscape page, or use Rotate one desk to move everyone along for the next week.
Ideas for class
- Randomise at the start of each unit so students sit with different neighbors, then adjust by hand for the students who need a spot.
- Put students who need the board, the door or your help in the front row, and keep two students apart who distract each other.
- Print one chart for your substitute folder and one for the wall by the door, with the title for the period.
- Rotate one desk each week so every student gets a turn at the window and a turn at the back.
- Arrange pairs, groups of four or tables of six for the shape of your classroom, then seat the class in minutes.
- Keep a chart for each period under a different title by changing the list and printing before you move on.

Questions
Where is the class list stored?
Only in this browser, on this computer. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else. There is deliberately no share link for this tool because it holds a whole class list; print the chart instead. Clearing your browser data removes it.
Can I keep charts for several classes?
The page keeps one chart at a time. For several periods, print each one with its title before changing the list.
How do keep-apart and front-row rules work?
Randomise tries many swaps until no pair you listed sits next to each other, even diagonally, and everyone who needs the front row is in it. If a rule cannot be met, for example when the front row is full, the page tells you what it could not do.
Does it work on a touch screen?
Yes. Drag with a finger, or tap a name and then a desk. With a keyboard, Tab to a name, press Enter, Tab to a desk and press Enter.
How do I make a desk or a gap?
Press Shape the room, then tap any cell to switch it between a desk and a gap. Choosing a layout such as pairs, groups of four or a U shape sets them all at once, and you can fine-tune after.
