About this sheet

In early grades, in art rooms and in labs, children sit at tables, not desks, and the chart has to show the seats around each one. This page draws each table as a rounded rectangle with its number inside and its seats along the two long sides, four to eight seats a table and two to nine tables to a page. Each seat has a line for a name. Choose how many to match your room, edit the label on the board, and write names in pencil. The same page works for a lunch room, a library, a staff meeting around tables or a parent evening. Keep a copy for yourself and one for a substitute.

Best in: August, September, January.

How to use it

  1. Choose the number of tables and the seats at each, from four to eight. Print on landscape letter or A4.
  2. Write the names in pencil by seat, going round each table the same way, so a substitute can read the chart.
  3. Number the tables on the real tables to match the page, with a table tent, so everyone sees where to go.

Five ideas for class

  1. Number the tables with table tents from this site so children can find their place on the first day without being led.
  2. Use the table numbers as a quick way to dismiss or call the class: Table two, you may line up.
  3. Plan table groups for a unit and change them at the break between units, so the children work with new people each time.
  4. Mark where children who work well together sit side by side, and leave a gap where two should be apart.
  5. Use the chart for a lab, writing a different student's name beside each role, such as materials, timekeeper and recorder.

Questions

Why seats on only two sides?

Most classroom tables are long, and children sit along the long sides. For a square table, ignore the layout and write four names on the same page.

Can I do round tables?

The page draws rectangles, but the numbers of seats work for round tables too. Write the names round the table in the same order.

Do you keep the names?

No names are typed here, so none can be stored. Write them by hand and keep the chart private.

How do I save it as a PDF?

Choose Print, then pick “Save as PDF” as the printer. Only the sheet prints: the page around it is hidden. You can also save a sheet as a PNG image under the preview.

Can I print it in black and white?

Yes. Switch to Black and white beside the sheet: fills turn white and lines turn black, so it saves ink and photocopies cleanly.

Is what I type saved or sent anywhere?

Your edits are kept in this browser so they are there next time, and are never sent to us. No sign-in, no ads.
