About this sheet
The 3-2-1 is a favorite because it asks for a little of three different kinds of thinking: what I know, what I noticed and what I wonder. Three lines for facts the child has learned is easy to fill. Two lines for what was interesting or unexpected asks for a reaction. One box for a question that remains asks for the edge of understanding, and that is the one a teacher most wants to read. The three headings are editable, so the same page can be 3 facts, 2 examples and 1 opinion, or any other split. It works as an exit slip after a lesson, as a response to a text or a video, and as a closing activity at the end of a unit.
Grades: 2 to 12. Best in: September, October, January.
How to use it
- Edit the three headings if you like, and print a class set on letter or A4. Half pages work too, cut across the middle.
- After the lesson, give students three minutes to fill in the lines and the box in their own words.
- Collect the slips and read the one-question boxes first. They tell you what to teach again, and what to teach next.
Five ideas for class
- Use it after a video or a read-aloud, where the chance to reflect matters more than a quiz.
- Let students trade slips with a partner, who answers the question box if they can. It gives the question a second life.
- Collect the questions from the boxes into a class list and use them as the start of the next lesson.
- Keep the slips through a unit, and read them together at the end to show how the questions changed.
- Change the numbers for a different load: a 2-1-1 for the youngest, or a 5-3-1 for a longer unit.

Questions
Does it have to be 3-2-1?
No. Edit the headings, or write your own on the page. The numbers of lines are fixed: three, two and one box.
What do I do with the questions?
Read them, sort them and answer the best ones at the start of the next lesson. A question that is answered tells a child that asking is worth it.
How is it different from the exit tickets?
The tickets give one prompt a ticket and several to a page. This slip is a full page with three connected prompts, for a longer reflection.
How do I save it as a PDF?
Choose Print, then pick “Save as PDF” as the printer. Only the sheet prints: the page around it is hidden. You can also save a sheet as a PNG image under the preview.
Can I print it in black and white?
Yes. Switch to Black and white beside the sheet: fills turn white and lines turn black, so it saves ink and photocopies cleanly.
