How to use it

  1. Paste a paragraph or two from your lesson, or start from one of the reading passages. The line under the box says roughly what grade the text reads at.
  2. Choose how the blanks are picked: every 5th to 10th word (the first sentence stays whole), longer words only (so the blanks test meaning, not grammar), or tap the words you want.
  3. Leave the word bank on for younger readers or new vocabulary; turn it off for a harder check.
  4. Print. The answer key is on its own page.

Ideas for class

  • Use a cloze of yesterday's reading as a warm-up: students who understood it fill the blanks quickly.
  • Tap only this week's vocabulary words to make a vocabulary-in-context sheet in a minute.
  • Run the same text twice, every 7th word and then longer words only, and compare which blanks were harder.
  • Pair it with the quiz maker: the passage's own questions on one sheet, a cloze of its text on another.
  • Accept any word that fits the meaning and the grammar; talking about the near misses is half the lesson.

Questions

What is a cloze worksheet?

A text with some words taken out and lines left in their place. Readers use the meaning of the rest of the text to fill each gap, which shows whether they followed it.

Why does the first sentence stay whole?

It gives the reader the topic and the voice of the text before the gaps begin. That is how a classic cloze is set up.

Does the word bank give the answers away?

It narrows them down, which suits younger readers and new vocabulary. Turn it off when you want readers to find the word themselves.
