30 vocabulary games that make students use the words

These thirty use any word list, from a unit's science terms to this week's reading words: whole-class games, partner games, games on paper and quick ones for spare minutes. Each says how to play, what you need and the grades it suits.

Making it work
- Use the same word list for a week, across several games, so students meet each word many times in different ways.
- Choose games where students produce the word (say it, write it, act it) over games where they only recognize it.
- Make the materials once and reuse them: flashcards, a crossword and a bingo set from the same list cover a week of games.
- Mix fast games with slow ones. Charades builds energy; a Frayer model builds depth.
Questions teachers ask
- How many vocabulary words should I teach a week?
- Most teachers choose a short list they can revisit every day, often five to ten words. A short list used in many games tends to stick better than a long list used once.
- What vocabulary games work for kindergarten?
- Games with movement and pictures: word charades, memory match with picture cards, example or not with thumbs, and listening games where you describe a word and children point to its picture.
- How do I make vocabulary games for my own word list?
- Type the list once into our makers: the crossword maker for clue practice, the flashcard maker for partner games and the bingo card generator for a whole-class round.
