About this set
A gentle crossword for the week of Valentine’s Day: thirteen words about friendship, cards and treats, with short clues that a first or second grader can read with a partner (it has hearts on a card, a red flower with thorns, a baby with wings and a bow) and enough variety, from short words like card and love to long ones like envelope and friendship, to keep older students busy. Turn on the word bank for the youngest class, and turn the answer key off if you want students to check one another’s work instead.
Grades: 1st to 5th grade. Best in: February.

How to use it: five ideas
- Partner solve: pairs read each clue aloud and agree on the answer before writing it.
- Word bank for first grade: leave it on so students match clues to words and practice spelling.
- Write a clue: students write a clue for “kindness” or “friendship” and add it to the box to make a longer puzzle.
- Party warm-up: use it as the activity while students wait for the party to begin.
- Different layouts: press Make another so every pair has a slightly different puzzle.
