About this set
This Valentine’s puzzle leans toward friendship and kindness. The twenty-three words are the objects of the day (heart, card, envelope, mailbox, chocolate, roses, bouquet, ribbon, flowers, teddy bear, cupcake), the characters (cupid, arrow) and the words children are asked to practice (love, friendship, kindness, sweetheart, hugs, gift). It is set to Easy on a 15 by 15 grid so every child, from kindergarten to fifth grade, can find all of them. It prints in black and white, which saves color ink for the party.
Grades: Kindergarten to 5th grade. Best in: February.

How to use it: five ideas
- Party station: put the puzzle at a table with crayons so students can color each word they find a different color.
- Kindness link: after solving, students write the word “kindness” and three ways to show it.
- Class mailbox: use words from the puzzle as the labels on the class valentine mailbox.
- Rhyme time: find the words and make a rhyme for each (heart, art; rose, nose).
- Make it harder: use Medium with diagonals for third grade and above.

Questions
Does it print in black and white?
Yes. The puzzle is black and white, so it prints cheaply, and students can color it in themselves.
Can I make one with my class’s names?
Yes. Type the names into the box and print. They stay in your browser and are never sent to us.
Can I change the words or the difficulty?
Yes. Edit the 23 words in the box, choose Easy, Medium or Hard, pick a grid size from 8 to 25 and a shape, and add a secret message if you like. The puzzle rebuilds as you change it, and any word that cannot fit is listed.
Can we play it on the board?
Yes. Press “Play on the board”: the class finds words by dragging across them or tapping the first and last letters, each find plays a note, and H gives a hint. Press F to fill the projector.
How do I save it as a PDF?
Press Print and choose “Save as PDF” as the printer. The puzzle is page one and the answer key is page two.
How do I get a different layout?
Press “Make another”. The same words are placed in a new arrangement, which is handy when neighbors should not have the same puzzle.
