About this set
This puzzle is set to Easy on a 12 by 12 grid, so words run only across and down, because it is made for the youngest students on the 100th day: kindergarten through third grade. The twenty words are the vocabulary of the day: hundred, count, tally, tens, ones, skip count, chart, place value, pennies, dimes, nickels, collection, celebrate, crown, smarter, digits, cubes, pattern, numbers and groups. Searching for them is quiet, a bit of reading practice, and a good way to start a day that is otherwise full of counting stations and 100-item collections.
Grades: Kindergarten to 3rd grade. Best in: January, February.
The words to find
Hundred · Count · Tally · Tens · Ones · Skip count · Chart · Place value · Pennies · Dimes · Nickels · Collection · Celebrate · Crown · Smarter · Digits · Cubes · Pattern · Numbers · Groups
How to use it: five ideas
- Station activity: put the puzzle at one of the 100th-day stations, next to the counting and collection tasks.
- Count it: students count the letters in the longest word they found and write the number.
- Place value: students find “tens” and “ones” and make 100 with ten groups of ten.
- Sort the words: math words (tens, ones, digits, chart) and party words (crown, celebrate, smarter).
- Try Medium: for second and third grade, turn on diagonals and use a 15 × 15 grid.

Questions
Why is it easy?
The 100th day is mostly a kindergarten and first grade event, so this puzzle starts at Easy with a smaller 12 × 12 grid. You can raise the difficulty and the size.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. The second page shows each word circled, so you can check quickly or hand it to a helper.
Can I change the words or the difficulty?
Yes. Edit the 20 words in the box, choose Easy, Medium or Hard, pick a grid size from 8 to 25 and a shape, and add a secret message if you like. The puzzle rebuilds as you change it, and any word that cannot fit is listed.
Can we play it on the board?
Yes. Press “Play on the board”: the class finds words by dragging across them or tapping the first and last letters, each find plays a note, and H gives a hint. Press F to fill the projector.
How do I save it as a PDF?
Press Print and choose “Save as PDF” as the printer. The puzzle is page one and the answer key is page two.
How do I get a different layout?
Press “Make another”. The same words are placed in a new arrangement, which is handy when neighbors should not have the same puzzle.
