About this set

Thirteen winter words with a clue for each, written so that a good second grader can solve them with the pictures in their head and a fifth grader still has to think: a spike of ice hanging from a roof, a big snowstorm with strong wind, what some animals do all winter. The words cross at shared letters, so every answer helps with another. Turn on the word bank for younger students and leave it off for older ones, and press Make another for a different layout from the same clues, so neighbors do not share the same puzzle.

Grades: 2nd to 5th grade. Best in: December, January, February.

How to use it: five ideas

  1. Word bank for grade 2: leave it on, and have partners read each clue aloud before they write.
  2. No word bank for grade 5: students solve from the clues alone, then check against the answer key.
  3. Write your own: students make three new clues in their own words for any three answers.
  4. Science link: add one clue per day to the class crossword from the winter unit (frost, hibernate, blizzard).
  5. Different layouts: press Make another for each table so students cannot copy from neighbors.
