What this worksheet covers
Each clock on this sheet is drawn with an hour hand that moves smoothly between numbers, as on a real clock, and a minute hand on a number from 1 to 12. The times are on the five-minute marks, so the minute hand points to a number and students must count by fives. The answer is written as digits, such as 4:35, and the key gives the same form.
Who it is for
Second grade and a review in third. Common Core 2.MD.C.7 asks students to tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m. Students should already read the hour and the half hour.
Reading an analog clock to the nearest five minutes · grades 2 and 3
A worked example
The hour hand is just past the 4 and the minute hand points to the 7. The hour hand tells us it is after four o'clock. The minute hand on 7 means 7 × 5 = 35 minutes. The time is 4:35.
Mistakes to watch for
- Reading the minute hand as the hour, so a minute hand on 7 becomes 7:00. Name the short hand and the long hand separately.
- Using the next hour when the hour hand is almost at the next number, such as 5:50. Look at which number it has passed, not which it is near.
