What this worksheet covers
Finding a percent of a number is the first step in percent problems. This sheet uses the percents that students meet most often, 10%, 20%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%, with numbers that are multiples of 20 up to 240, so every answer is a whole number. It is a sheet for building the benchmarks that let students find a percent mentally.
Who it is for
Sixth grade. Common Core 6.RP.A.3c asks students to find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100. Students should know that a percent is a fraction with a denominator of 100 and be comfortable with 1/2, 1/4 and 1/10.
Finding 10%, 25%, 50% and similar percents of a number · grade 6
A worked example
25% of 80. 25% is one quarter, and a quarter of 80 is 20. For 10% of 240, move the decimal point one place to the left to get 24. For 75%, find 25% and multiply by 3: 60.
Mistakes to watch for
- Treating the percent as the answer, writing 25 for 25% of 80. Ask whether the result should be smaller than 80, and by how much.
- Multiplying by 25 and forgetting to divide by 100. A fraction benchmark is a way round the slip.
