What this worksheet covers
The 8s are the 4s doubled, which are the 2s doubled twice. Every problem on this sheet has an 8 in it, with the other factor from 2 to 10 in either order. The ones digits of the table fall by two each time: 8, 6, 4, 2, 0, and then again, so the multiples of 8 end in the same digits as the 2s in reverse. There are nine facts in all.
Who it is for
Third grade, 3.OA.C.7. Teach it after the 4s. By then a student can double any 4s fact and arrive at an 8s fact, and the sheet is a way to check that.
The 8 times table, from 8 × 2 to 8 × 10 · grade 3
A worked example
For 8 × 6, take 4 × 6 = 24 and double it to get 48. For 8 × 8, double 4 × 8 = 32 and get 64. Ask students to say the fact in the form eight times six is forty-eight, so that the words carry the product.
Mistakes to watch for
- Mixing 8 × 7 and 8 × 8 as 54 and 63. Say them side by side: fifty-six, sixty-four.
- Doubling the 4s fact only once. Check that the answer for 8 × n is always even and twice the 4s product.
