What this worksheet covers
The 6s start to ask for more than counting. Every problem has a 6 in it, with the other factor from 2 to 10 in either order. A useful way into the table is that 6 × n is 5 × n plus one more n, which draws on the 5s that students already know well. There are nine facts, so the three versions reuse them in different orders.
Who it is for
Third grade, 3.OA.C.7. Teach it after the 3s, because 6 × n is 3 × n doubled. A student who knows both the 5s and the 3s can derive any fact on this sheet.
The 6 times table, from 6 × 2 to 6 × 10 · grade 3
A worked example
For 6 × 8, work from 5 × 8 = 40 and add one more 8: 48. Or double 3 × 8 = 24 to get 48. Two routes to the same product is a good habit, and it shows students that the numbers fit together.
Mistakes to watch for
- Mistaking 6 × 7 for 36 or 48. The correct 42 is the one that is hardest to hold, so spend extra time on it.
- Starting from 6 × 5 and adding the wrong number, so 6 × 7 becomes 30 + 6. Add the other factor, which is 7.
