How to use it

  1. The timer is already set to 51 minutes. Press Start, or tap the Space bar.
  2. Press F to fill the screen. The buttons fade away until you move the mouse; press Esc to come back.
  3. Add or take off 30 seconds with the arrow keys. If you need a different length, press a preset or choose Custom.

Ideas for class

  • Time a Socratic seminar or discussion, with a turn-taking rule for the whole class.
  • Set a full class period so you and the students can see how much is left.
  • Run a department or staff meeting with a visible clock so everyone knows when it ends.
  • Set a presentation round: each group has its share of the time and the clock shows whose turn it is.
  • Split 51 minutes into 36 to work and 15 to share: press Start, and pause at 36:00 elapsed to switch.
  • The halfway mark is 25:30: when the digits reach it, ask students to hold up fingers for how far through the task they are.
  • Divide it into 3 rotations of 17 minutes: call "switch" each time the digits show a multiple of 17.

Questions

Is a 51 minute timer good for a test?

It works well as a visible clock for a test or a long task. Set it to 51 minutes, press Start, and use full screen with the Quiet style if you do not want colours changing or a sound at the end. You can also pause it if the class is interrupted, and press Resume to continue from the same time.

How do I change the 51 minute timer?

Press a preset button or choose Custom and type a length such as 7:30 or 90s. The page address updates to carry the new length, so you can bookmark it or share it. This page always opens at 51 minutes.

Will the 51 minute timer keep the right time if the tab is in the background?

Yes. The countdown compares the clock when you pressed Start with the clock now, so it stays right when a tab sleeps. When it reaches zero it plays a short, soft chime (press M to turn the sound off) and the page title in the tab says the time is up.
