How to become a substitute teacher in Louisiana

We could not find a Louisiana Department of Education page that sets a schooling rule or a license for day-to-day subs, so each parish or city school system sets its own. State law (R.S. 17:15) does set the background rules. A school system may not hire a substitute teacher with certain criminal convictions, and it must collect fingerprints before hiring. Check with the school system you want to work for.

Checked October 30, 2026 on the Louisiana Department of Education's own pages. Rules change; the state's page and your district have the last word.
