How to become a substitute teacher in Alabama
In Alabama, the State Department of Education (ALSDE) issues a Substitute License. You need a high school diploma or an ALSDE-approved equivalent; a certificate of attendance does not count. You cannot apply on your own. The hiring superintendent or private school leader applies for you. You must clear a fingerprint background check with the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation and the FBI, and show citizenship or lawful presence.
Checked October 30, 2026 on the Alabama State Department of Education, Educator Certification Section's own pages. Rules change; the state's page and your district have the last word.
