Can a substitute send a student to the office?

Yes, for serious problems, following the school's own procedure. Warren Township Schools says serious cases go to the principal right away, and Whitko Community Schools asks subs to report serious problems to the principal's office immediately. Dysart Unified says to consult the principal when a problem is more than you can handle.

How you do it depends on the school. Some want a phone call so someone comes to collect the student, some use a referral form, and some never want a student walking the halls alone. San Ramon Valley says each site has its own behavior plan, so ask the office at sign-in.

If a student is putting themselves or others in danger, Whitko says to move the other students to a nearby room or hallway and notify the office at once. Do not try to handle it physically. San Ramon Valley tells subs plainly not to touch students.

Asking for help is normal. San Ramon Valley tells subs that calling on staff is not a reflection on their ability. Write down what happened and who you sent, for the teacher's note.
