About this sheet

The hundredth day of school is a landmark, and a chart makes the count toward it visible from the first morning. This one is a grid of one hundred squares, tinted in a check pattern for tracking, each with its number in small gray type. A child colors the day's square each morning, and the picture builds row by row. It teaches counting, tens and place value without a lesson: ten rows, ten in a row, the ones that end in the same digit lining up in a column. Make one for the class on the wall, from the PNG download enlarged, or print one for each child to keep in a folder. It is neutral on holidays and fits any year that has a hundredth day.

Grades: Pre-K to 2. Best in: January, February.

How to use it

  1. Print one for the wall, enlarged from the PNG, or one for each child. Write the name at the top of each child's chart.
  2. Each morning, a student colors in the square for the day, or places a sticker on it, and the class says the number aloud.
  3. On the hundredth day, count the squares together and talk about what the class has done in a hundred days.

Five ideas for class

  1. Color each row of ten in a different color, so that the pattern of tens appears as the weeks go on.
  2. Ask a question each time a row is complete: how many days have we been in school, and how many more to a hundred?
  3. Mark the days with something special, such as a field trip or an assembly, with a tiny symbol in the square.
  4. Use the chart as a number sense tool: what is ten more, ten fewer, or one more than today?
  5. Send a copy home on the day with a note to the family about what the class did, and let each child take theirs.

Questions

When is the hundredth day?

It depends on your school's calendar. Count the school days from the first, skipping holidays and breaks. Many schools reach it in January or February.

Is there a blank one without numbers?

Yes. The blank hundreds grid in the math shelf has no numbers, so children can fill them in.

Can I use it in a homeschool?

Yes. Count your own days of learning, and color a square on each. The chart works for any count of days.

How do I save it as a PDF?

Choose Print, then pick “Save as PDF” as the printer. Only the sheet prints: the page around it is hidden. You can also save a sheet as a PNG image under the preview.

Can I print it in black and white?

Yes. Switch to Black and white beside the sheet: fills turn white and lines turn black, so it saves ink and photocopies cleanly.
