About this sheet
Writing a thank you note is one of the few pieces of real writing that a young child can do for a real reader, and getting one is a small event for the person who receives it. These cards are note size, six to a page, with a colored strip for the title and plenty of lines. The title is editable: Thank you, Thanks for helping, or a line in another language. Print on card stock, cut the cards apart and fold them in half for a card, or leave them flat. The cards suit a class that wants to thank a visitor, a volunteer, the lunch staff or a grandparent, and they work for a gratitude week or for any time a note is due.
Grades: K to 6. Best in: September, November, December, May.
How to use it
- Edit the title on the cards if you like, and print on card stock. Cut along the borders to separate the six cards.
- Decide who to thank, and talk about what makes a good note: a name, a specific thing, and how it helped.
- Children write their notes, draw a picture on the back and deliver them by hand or through the office.
Five ideas for class
- Model a note on the board first. Write a specific one, thank you for reading to us on Tuesday, and show how it names the thing.
- Make a list with the class of people who help the school, such as the custodian, the cook and the bus driver, and write to each.
- Write notes to family members and send them home, so that the writing has a reader who will answer.
- Ask each child to write a note to a classmate they have not worked with yet, and deliver the notes at the end of the week.
- Keep a stack in the writing center so a child who wants to thank someone can write a note at any time.

Questions
Can I change the title?
Yes. Type the title in the box, one per card, or use the same title for all six. Any language is fine.
What paper works best?
Card stock in a pale color. A card folded in half takes a short note and stands up on a desk.
Are the notes tied to a holiday?
No. They suit any month and any reason for thanks, from a visitor to a helper.
How do I save it as a PDF?
Choose Print, then pick “Save as PDF” as the printer. Only the sheet prints: the page around it is hidden. You can also save a sheet as a PNG image under the preview.
Can I print it in black and white?
Yes. Switch to Black and white beside the sheet: fills turn white and lines turn black, so it saves ink and photocopies cleanly.
