About this sheet

Every teacher has come back from the library to a note from the office or a parent at an empty door. This sign answers the question before it is asked. It is a heading and a list of the places your class goes, each with a box beside it. Laminate it, hang it by the door and tick the right box with a dry-erase marker when you leave, or clip a clothespin to the line. The list is yours: change the places to match your school's schedule, and add the time you expect to be back. A visitor, a parent with a forgotten lunch or a nervous new student can read where you are in two seconds.

Grades: Pre-K to 6. Best in: August, September.

How to use it

  1. Type the places your class goes, one per line, such as Library, Gym, Music, Art, Lunch. Edit the heading if you like.
  2. Print on card stock and laminate it, then hang it by the door at adult eye level with tape or a hook.
  3. When you leave the room, tick the box with a dry-erase marker, and wipe it clean when you return.

Five ideas for class

  1. Assign a student each week to tick the box when the class leaves, so that it is part of the routine and not left to the teacher.
  2. Add a line at the bottom for the time you expect to be back, written with a dry-erase marker, so a visitor knows how long to wait.
  3. Use clothespins instead of ticks: clip one to the place the class has gone, and move it back when you return.
  4. Print a second sign for the other door if your room has two, so the message is there whichever way a visitor comes.
  5. Include a line for a field trip or an assembly, so the sign covers the unusual days as well as the regular ones.

Questions

Is it for the class or for a single student?

For the class. A sign about where one named student is should not be posted on a door, so the list here holds places the whole class goes.

How do I keep ticks from smudging?

Laminate the sign and use a dry-erase marker. Wipe the box clean with a tissue when you return, and tick the new place on the way out.

Can I add the time?

Yes. Edit the heading or add a last line for the time, and write the time in with a marker each day.

How do I save it as a PDF?

Choose Print, then pick “Save as PDF” as the printer. Only the sheet prints: the page around it is hidden. You can also save a sheet as a PNG image under the preview.

Can I print it in black and white?

Yes. Switch to Black and white beside the sheet: fills turn white and lines turn black, so it saves ink and photocopies cleanly.
