About this sheet

A classroom door is the first place a child, a family or a visitor meets the room, and a sign sets the tone before a word is spoken. This one is simple: a double border, a band of dots at the top and bottom, and your own words. The big word is the heading, which you can change to Welcome, Bienvenidos, Come In or the name of the room, and the lines beneath are small text for a greeting, a room number or a reminder. Print in color for the first day, or in black and white and let the class color it. It works as a sign for a library corner, a quiet room or the front of a club.

Grades: Pre-K to 8. Best in: August, September, January.

How to use it

  1. Type the big word in the heading box, and up to four small lines in the second box, such as the room and a greeting.
  2. Print on card stock in landscape, in color for the door or in black and white for the class to color together.
  3. Post it at a child's eye level next to the door, with tape or a clear sleeve, and change the words with the season.

Five ideas for class

  1. Let the class decide the words together on the first day. A sign they wrote is a sign they feel at home beside.
  2. Print the sign in the languages of the families in your class, one sheet each, and post them together at the door.
  3. Use the lines for a daily message, printed small, such as today's question or the word of the day, and swap it each week.
  4. Print in black and white and let each child color a corner, so the sign is the class's own work by the time it goes up.
  5. Use the sign for other doors too: the library corner, the calm-down space, or the spot where the class lines up.

Questions

How big is the sign?

It fills a letter or A4 page in landscape. Print it on card stock or put it in a plastic sleeve so it lasts the year.

Can I use another language?

Yes. Type any word, and the sheet fits it to the width. Multilingual classrooms often post the same sign in several languages.

Can I add a picture?

Print in black and white and draw or stick a picture in the open space, or leave the lines for a short message.

How do I save it as a PDF?

Choose Print, then pick “Save as PDF” as the printer. Only the sheet prints: the page around it is hidden. You can also save a sheet as a PNG image under the preview.

Can I print it in black and white?

Yes. Switch to Black and white beside the sheet: fills turn white and lines turn black, so it saves ink and photocopies cleanly.
