About this sheet

Team points work best when the finish line is clear and the whole class can win. This chart shows progress as a row of circles that fill in as the table earns points, so nobody has to remember a running total, and the team that is behind can still see how close it is. You choose the number of circles from 10 to 30, which sets how long the race lasts: ten for a day, thirty for a week or more. The goal is shared across teams, so a table can win without another table losing.

Grades: 1 to 6.

How to use it

  1. List your teams or tables, one per line. Use colors, animals, numbers or the names your class likes.
  2. Choose the goal. Ten circles makes a quick game, twenty makes a week.
  3. Post the chart at the front of the room. Color one circle for the team each time it earns a point.

Five ideas for class

  1. Make the goal shared: when every team reaches the last circle, the whole class earns the reward. This keeps the focus on cooperation.
  2. Give points for the thing you want to see more of, such as being ready on time, and say which behavior you are rewarding when you color the circle.
  3. Use it for a unit review game: a team earns a point for each correct answer, and the race lasts the week.
  4. Let each team choose its own color for its circles, so the chart shows each team at a glance from the back of the room.
  5. Start a new chart each week so every team has a fresh chance at the finish line.

Questions

Does team competition cause problems?

It can. To keep it healthy, reward behaviors rather than correct answers, make the goal shared, and give small teams a head start if they need one. Watch for blame and stop the game if it starts.

How many teams fit on one sheet?

Up to ten. With six teams and twenty circles each, the rows are tall enough to see from across the room if you print the chart larger.

Can I print it bigger?

Save the PNG and take it to a copy shop to print it as a poster, or tape two sheets together.

How do I save it as a PDF?

Choose Print, then pick “Save as PDF” as the printer. Only the sheet prints: the page around it is hidden. You can also save a sheet as a PNG image under the preview.

Can I print it in black and white?

Yes. Switch to Black and white beside the sheet: fills turn white and lines turn black, so it saves ink and photocopies cleanly.
