How to use it

  1. Choose how many dice and which kind: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 or d20.
  2. Press Roll or the Space bar. The dice shake, then show their faces and the total.
  3. Roll again as often as you like. The last twelve rolls are listed under the dice.

Ideas for class

  • Roll two dice for a sums game: students race to write the addition fact, then the subtraction fact for the same two numbers.
  • Collect data: roll two dice thirty times, tally the totals on the board, and ask why seven comes up most.
  • Use a d20 to choose a page, a problem or a student number between one and twenty.
  • Play roll and multiply with two dice, or roll three and make the biggest number you can with the digits.
  • Run a board game or a class race when the physical dice have gone missing, which they always do.
  • Use a d4, d8 or d12 for younger or older students to match the numbers they are working with.

Questions

Is it fair like a real die?

Yes. Every face has the same chance. Each roll uses your browser's secure random generator, with no bias, and we test it by rolling tens of thousands of times and checking each face comes up about equally.

Why is seven the most common total with two dice?

There are six ways to make seven (1+6, 2+5, 3+4 and the reverses) but only one way to make two or twelve. Try it with the tally and see: it is a good way to introduce probability.

What does d20 mean?

A d20 is a die with twenty faces, numbered 1 to 20. The number after the d is how many faces. A usual die is a d6.

Can I roll different kinds of dice at the same time?

Not in the same roll. Pick the kind of die, then roll. For a mix, roll one kind, write down the result, and change the setting.

What if I want the dice to land without moving?

If your device is set to reduce motion, the dice show their result straight away, with no shaking.
