About this set

Thirteen farm words with short, clear clues that first and second graders can read: a farm animal that gives us milk, a male chicken that crows at sunrise, a tall tower where a farmer stores grain, the soft thick hair cut from a sheep. The words are the ones a farm unit teaches, and most are short (cow, pig, hen, hay, duck), so a beginning reader can solve several of them without help while the longer ones (tractor, rooster, horse) give the strongest readers something to work for. Keep the word bank on, read the clues together, and press Make another to give each table its own layout.

Grades: 1st to 3rd grade. Best in: September, October, April.

How to use it: five ideas

  1. Read aloud together: read each clue to the group and let the table whisper the answer before anyone writes it.
  2. Draw the answer: students draw three answers and label them for a farm wall display.
  3. Sound match: next to each animal answer, students write the sound it makes.
  4. Write a clue: students write a clue for Duck or Goat in their own words and swap with a neighbor.
  5. Take it home: print one for each student, with the answer key kept in your folder, as a first crossword to try with a grown-up.

Questions

Is the crossword too hard for first grade?

With the word bank on and a partner reading the clues, first graders can do it. Delete Tractor and Rooster, the longest words, to make it a little shorter.

Can I add the animals from our field trip?

Yes. Add a new line with a word, a colon and a clue (Alpaca: A fluffy animal from South America with a long neck) and the crossword is rebuilt with it.

Can I change the words and clues?

Yes. Each of the 13 lines is a word, a colon and its clue. Edit any of them, and the crossword is rebuilt with new numbers.

How do I save it as a PDF?

Press Print and choose “Save as PDF” as the printer. The puzzle is page one and the answer key is page two.

How do I get a different layout?

Press “Make another”. The same words and clues are placed in a new arrangement, so each table can have its own puzzle.
