About this set
Twenty-two words from the farm, in a 12 by 12 grid with the words running only across and down (Easy), which is the right place to start for kindergarten and first grade. There are short ones every beginning reader can sound out (cow, pig, hay, hen) and longer ones for the strongest readers (tractor, chicken, pasture, donkey). The list covers the animals, the baby animals (lamb and calf), the buildings (barn, coop, silo), the farmer and what comes from the farm (wool and milk). Switch to Medium or Hard and a larger grid, and the same words give second and third grade a real challenge.
Grades: Kindergarten to 3rd grade. Best in: September, October, April.
The words to find

How to use it: five ideas
- Read-aloud link: after a farm picture book, students look for the words from the story and tick the ones they found in the book.
- Sort the words: students write the answers in three groups: animals, baby animals, and farm places and things.
- Sounds: next to each animal word, students write the sound it makes (cow, moo; sheep, baa; duck, quack).
- Pairs: two students share a puzzle and a pencil, taking turns finding and circling one word each.
- Take it home: send the puzzle home with a note asking families to find one farm word in a store or a book.

Questions
Is this puzzle too easy for third grade?
On Easy it can be, so choose Medium or Hard and a 15 by 15 grid, and it becomes a harder puzzle with the same twenty-two words.
Can I add the animals from our field trip?
Yes. Add words to the box, such as alpaca or llama, and the puzzle rebuilds with them. Up to forty words fit on a sheet.
Can I change the words or the difficulty?
Yes. Edit the 22 words in the box, choose Easy, Medium or Hard, pick a grid size from 8 to 25 and a shape, and add a secret message if you like. The puzzle rebuilds as you change it, and any word that cannot fit is listed.
Can we play it on the board?
Yes. Press “Play on the board”: the class finds words by dragging across them or tapping the first and last letters, each find plays a note, and H gives a hint. Press F to fill the projector.
How do I save it as a PDF?
Press Print and choose “Save as PDF” as the printer. The puzzle is page one and the answer key is page two.
How do I get a different layout?
Press “Make another”. The same words are placed in a new arrangement, which is handy when neighbors should not have the same puzzle.
