Top 9 apps for substitute teachers: job alerts, miles and pay (2026)

Checked October 2026For TeachersKind Software and appsNo affiliate links, no paid placement. How we chose

One entry, Pay and miles log, is our own free tool. It is marked Ours and ranked against the same criteria as the others.

Quick answer

Frontline's absence management app comes first, because in a district that uses it, it is where sub jobs reach your phone. This list is for substitute teachers who want their phone to do three jobs: catch job alerts, count the miles between schools and keep track of the days and pay. Every app was opened on its own site on 31 Oct 2026. For agencies that hire subs, see our separate list.

How we chose

We weighed these, most important first. The order is our judgement against them, not a score or a vote, and a different teacher could reasonably order it differently. Our own tool sits where those criteria put it; we built it after studying the others, so read its entry with that in mind.

  1. Does a sub's job. Each app has to catch job alerts, track miles or keep track of days and pay, the three jobs subs ask a phone to do.
  2. A free way to start. Apps with a free plan or no charge to subs rank above paid ones, and we say what the free plan leaves out.
  3. Little to set up. Apps that work in the background or need one tap a day rank above ones that need daily typing.

We took no money, free products or affiliate commissions for any place on this list, and no link here carries a tracking code. Every fact was read on the maker’s own page on October 31, 2026; prices carry that date because they change. See how we choose and the ad-free promise.

Questions

What app do substitute teachers use to get jobs?
Whatever the district uses. Many districts post sub jobs through absence systems such as Frontline, whose app sends job alerts; agency subs use the agency's app, such as Scoot2Work. Ask your district which system it uses when you are hired.
Should a sub track miles?
If you drive between schools or your district or agency repays miles, a mileage app makes the record easy. Whether miles count for taxes depends on your situation, so ask a tax professional; we give no tax advice.
How do I check my sub paycheck?
Keep a line for every day you work, full or half, with the rate you expect, then compare each pay period's total with the check. Our pay and miles log does this on your device; a spreadsheet works too.
