Top 10 substitute teacher agencies and apps for finding sub jobs (2026)

Checked October 2026For TeachersKind Software and appsNo affiliate links, no paid placement. How we chose

Quick answer

Frontline Absence Management comes first because its page reports the widest reach, over 7,000 school districts. This list is for people who want substitute teaching work and need to know where the jobs are posted. The order is by how widely each one is used, as stated on its own page, not by pay; we do not rank or compare pay.

How we chose

We weighed these, most important first. The order is our judgement against them, not a score or a vote, and a different teacher could reasonably order it differently.

  1. Reach stated on its own page. The order follows the reach each company reports on its own page: district and school counts first, highest first, then other figures; services that give no figure come last.
  2. Open to new substitutes. We kept agencies you can apply to and systems your district can add you to.
  3. Not ranked by pay. Pay is set with each district and agency, so we do not rank or compare it.

We took no money, free products or affiliate commissions for any place on this list, and no link here carries a tracking code. Every fact was read on the maker’s own page on October 30, 2026; prices carry that date because they change. See how we choose and the ad-free promise.

Questions

What is the difference between an agency and an absence app?
An agency such as ESS, Kelly Education or Swing hires you and places you in its partner districts. Absence software such as Frontline, PowerSchool or Red Rover is what a district uses to post jobs to subs it has already hired.
Can I apply to a district directly?
Often, yes. Many districts hire their own subs and post the job on their website or a job board such as SchoolSpring or EDJOIN. Ask the district office how it hires subs.
Which pays best?
We do not compare pay. It depends on the district, the state and the role, so ask each district or agency before you sign up.
