Running record and fluency kit v0.1.0
An informal running record on the screen: pick one of the 53 reading passages or paste a text, tap each error and self-correction as the student reads, time it, and see accuracy, error rate, self-correction ratio and words correct per minute with every formula shown. Keep three readings for the mean and median. Print a blank record form or a class record sheet. Free, and nothing about a student leaves this tab.
Tap a word once for an error, twice for a self-correction, three times to clear it. Then tap “Mark the last word read” and the word the student reached.
| Words read | 0 | up to the last word reached |
|---|---|---|
| Errors · self-corrections | 0 · 0 | tapped once · tapped twice |
| Accuracy | – | (words read − errors) ÷ words read × 100 |
| Error rate | no errors | words read ÷ errors |
| Self-correction ratio | none | (errors + self-corrections) ÷ self-corrections |
| Words correct per minute | 0 | (words read − errors) × 60 ÷ seconds |
| Three readings | keep up to three |
Informal and not normed. Averaging three one-minute readings follows Timothy Shanahan, Shanahan on Literacy, 11 October 2025. To compare a score with published norms by grade and season, see Hasbrouck, J., & Tindal, G. (2017). An update to compiled ORF norms (Technical Report No. 1702). Behavioral Research and Teaching, University of Oregon. We link it and do not reprint it. Nothing here is sent anywhere; the kept readings stay in this tab until Clear.
Was this useful?
How to use it
- Pick a passage the student has not practiced, at about their level.
- Press Start as they begin. Tap a word once for an error, twice for a self-correction. Press Stop at the end, or after one minute.
- Press Mark the last word read, then tap the word they reached. The numbers update.
- Keep this reading. Do three short readings and use the median, then Clear.
Ideas for class
- Use the printed form at the reading table and type the counts in later, if a screen is in the way.
- Keep the class record sheet on paper in your binder: names never go into the computer.
- Pair the accuracy with the reading level finder to choose the next book.
- Listen to the retell as well as the rate: a fast reader who cannot retell needs comprehension work.

Questions
How do you calculate accuracy and the self-correction ratio?
Accuracy is words read minus errors, divided by words read. The self-correction ratio is errors plus self-corrections, divided by self-corrections, written as 1 to that number. For 100 words with 4 errors and 2 self-corrections: 96% accuracy and 1:3.
How do you work out words correct per minute?
Words read minus errors, times 60, divided by the seconds the reading took. 100 words with 4 errors in 60 seconds is 96 words correct per minute.
What is a normal WCPM for my grade?
This kit does not reprint norms. The published oral reading fluency norms are Hasbrouck, J., & Tindal, G. (2017). An update to compiled ORF norms (Technical Report No. 1702). Behavioral Research and Teaching, University of Oregon. Look up the grade and the time of year there.
Is anything saved?
Only the up to three words-correct-per-minute numbers you choose to keep, in this browser tab, until you press Clear or close it. There is no name field, and nothing is sent anywhere.
Nothing about a student is sent to us. There is no name field. Kept readings stay in this tab until Clear. Pressing Print notes that a form was printed, and nothing else. No sign-in, no ads, no AI.
