Can you score these running records?
Each question gives you the counts from one reading. Work out the number it asks for, then pick it. The why under each answer shows the formula and the arithmetic, the same ones the running record kit uses.
Question 1 of 8
A student reads a 100-word passage in one minute. You mark 4 errors and 2 self-corrections. What is the accuracy?
The four formulas
- Accuracy = (words read − errors) ÷ words read × 100.
- Error rate = words read ÷ errors, written 1:that number.
- Self-correction ratio = (errors + self-corrections) ÷ self-corrections, written 1:that number.
- Words correct per minute = (words read − errors) × 60 ÷ seconds.
- Self-corrections are never counted as errors. Ratios are rounded to the nearest whole number.

The best answer to every question, and why
- A student reads a 100-word passage in one minute. You mark 4 errors and 2 self-corrections. What is the accuracy? 96%. (100 − 4) ÷ 100 × 100 = 96. Self-corrections are not errors, so only the 4 errors come off.
- Same reading: 100 words, 4 errors, 2 self-corrections. What is the self-correction ratio? 1:3. (errors + self-corrections) ÷ self-corrections = (4 + 2) ÷ 2 = 3, written 1:3. The student fixed one of every three slips.
- A student reads 120 words with 6 errors and no self-corrections. What is the error rate? 1:20. Words read ÷ errors = 120 ÷ 6 = 20, written 1:20. One error in every 20 words.
- A student reads 150 words in 90 seconds, with 6 errors and 1 self-correction. What is the words correct per minute? 96. (words read − errors) × 60 ÷ seconds = (150 − 6) × 60 ÷ 90 = 96. The self-correction doesn't change it.
- A 200-word passage, read all the way through, with 10 errors and 3 self-corrections. What is the accuracy? 95%. (200 − 10) ÷ 200 × 100 = 95. The 3 self-corrections don't count against the student.
- A student makes 5 errors and 5 self-corrections in an 80-word passage. What is the self-correction ratio? 1:2. (5 + 5) ÷ 5 = 2, written 1:2. The student fixed one of every two slips, which shows strong self-checking.
- In a one-minute reading a student reaches word 87, with 3 errors and no self-corrections. What is the words correct per minute? 84. In exactly one minute it is simply words read − errors: 87 − 3 = 84.
- Three one-minute readings of different passages give 88, 101 and 96 words correct per minute. What is the median? 96. Put them in order, 88, 96, 101, and take the middle one: 96. The running record kit shows the median beside the mean.
