About this sheet

Older students manage several teachers at once, and the assignments that slip are usually the ones with a distant due date. A tracker puts every assignment, from every class, on one page in the order it is due. Each row has the assignment in the wide column, then the class, the due date, a box to tick and a space for the grade when it comes back. Students add a row when something is assigned and tick it when it is submitted, and the grades column becomes a quick record at the end of the term. It is one sheet to carry, in the front of a binder, in place of five separate planners.

Grades: 5 to 12. Best in: August, September, January.

How to use it

  1. Print one sheet per student per month or per unit. Students write the date and their name at the top.
  2. Add a row each time something is assigned: the assignment, the class and the due date. Tick the box when it is handed in.
  3. When the work is returned, write the grade in the last column and look back at the sheet each Friday.

Five ideas for class

  1. Ask students to reorder the page by due date every Monday. The act of reordering is the planning.
  2. Teach students to put a star beside anything worth more than a regular assignment, so large projects are not hiding in the list.
  3. Collect the trackers once a month, glance at them for a minute each, and write a short note on any student with several unticked boxes.
  4. Use a second sheet for long projects, with a row for each step and its own due date, so a project never shows up as a single deadline.
  5. Let students keep their old trackers in the back of the binder. Looking back at a term of completed work is a quiet way to build pride.

Questions

Should students write the grade?

Only if you want them to. The last column is optional, and you can edit the heading or leave it blank.

How many assignments fit on a page?

Fourteen rows by default, up to twenty-five. If a student fills a sheet, they can start another.

Is it too much for younger students?

For grades two to four the homework planner is better, because it is organized by day, not by assignment.

How do I save it as a PDF?

Choose Print, then pick “Save as PDF” as the printer. Only the sheet prints: the page around it is hidden. You can also save a sheet as a PNG image under the preview.

Can I print it in black and white?

Yes. Switch to Black and white beside the sheet: fills turn white and lines turn black, so it saves ink and photocopies cleanly.

Is what I type saved or sent anywhere?
