About this sheet

A bookmark is the smallest reward a reader can make for themselves, and coloring one is quiet, calm work for the last ten minutes of a day. These are drawn in plain line art, with no characters and no logos, from patterns that are fun to color in: stacked diamonds, rows of waves, interlocking gears and big outlined letters that spell READ. Each has a hole circle at the top for a ribbon and a box at the foot for a line of words, such as Happy reading, in any language you like. Print eight to a page on card stock, and children can color, cut and punch their own. The patterns also suit early finishers, a book fair and a library lesson.

Grades: 1 to 6. Best in: August, September, March, June.

How to use it

  1. Choose the pattern and edit the line of words at the foot. Print on white card stock, in black and white or color.
  2. Children color a bookmark with markers or pencil crayons, then cut it out along the outline.
  3. Punch the hole at the top, thread a ribbon or yarn through it, and tie a knot. Use the bookmark in a book the same day.

Five ideas for class

  1. Offer bookmarks as a calm choice when a child has finished their work, or as a quiet job in the last minutes of the day.
  2. Print a page of one pattern for a class set, so a child can choose their own design and trade bookmarks with a friend.
  3. Make bookmarks for a younger reading buddy, with a note on the back, and give them out at the next meeting.
  4. Change the words at the foot to a short message, such as a favorite line from a book you have read together.
  5. Use them as a gift for a school library fair, with a ribbon, or for families at a reading night.

Questions

Which patterns are in the list?

Diamonds, waves, planets and stars, flowers, big letters, gears, mountains, and birds and clouds. This page opens with the gears and the others are a click away.

Can I print in color?

The art is line art for coloring, in black ink in both modes. Print on colored card stock for a tinted bookmark.

What size is a bookmark?

About one and three quarters inches wide and just under five inches tall, eight to a page. They fit a paperback and most picture books.

How do I save it as a PDF?

Choose Print, then pick “Save as PDF” as the printer. Only the sheet prints: the page around it is hidden. You can also save a sheet as a PNG image under the preview.

Can I print it in black and white?

Yes. Switch to Black and white beside the sheet: fills turn white and lines turn black, so it saves ink and photocopies cleanly.
