About this sheet

These are for children who like to color a picture and not a pattern. Each bookmark holds a plain line drawing from the outdoors or the sky: a sun over layered mountains, three flowers with their stems and leaves, a flock of birds among clouds, or a planet with its ring beside stars and a crescent moon. They are drawn from simple shapes and are not trademarks, characters or copies of anyone's work. Each has a hole at the top for a ribbon and a box at the foot for a line of words, which you can change to a quotation, a name or a message. Print eight to a page on card stock, and let children color and cut them out.

Grades: K to 5. Best in: August, September, March, April, May, June.

How to use it

  1. Choose a scene, such as mountains, flowers, birds or planets, and edit the words at the foot if you want something other than the default.
  2. Print on white card stock and hand out a page, or cut pages in half for pairs to share.
  3. Children color a bookmark, cut it out, punch the hole and add a ribbon, then try it in a book.

Five ideas for class

  1. Link the scene to a science topic: color the planets bookmark during a space unit, and the flowers one while studying plants.
  2. Ask children to label two things in the scene on the back of the bookmark, such as a peak or a petal, for a quick vocabulary task.
  3. Use the mountains scene for a lesson on landforms, with children naming the highest peak and the sun's position.
  4. Print a page for each season and let the class make a set to keep or share, with a quotation from a favorite book.
  5. Let students add their own details to the scene, such as a tree or a moon, so each bookmark is different.

Questions

Are the pictures copyrighted?

They are drawn for this site from plain shapes and are free for classroom use. They do not copy any character, logo or brand.

Can I change the picture?

You can choose from eight designs in the list. The drawing itself is fixed, but the words at the foot can say anything.

What paper works best?

White card stock takes marker and colored pencil well and makes a bookmark that survives a school bag. Thin paper curls with wet markers.

How do I save it as a PDF?

Choose Print, then pick “Save as PDF” as the printer. Only the sheet prints: the page around it is hidden. You can also save a sheet as a PNG image under the preview.

Can I print it in black and white?

Yes. Switch to Black and white beside the sheet: fills turn white and lines turn black, so it saves ink and photocopies cleanly.

Is what I type saved or sent anywhere?

Your edits are kept in this browser so they are there next time, and are never sent to us. No sign-in, no ads.
