About this set
Thirteen words from a unit on the senses, each with a clue in plain words that a first or second grader can read with a partner: the two round parts of your face you use to see, the part of your body that covers you and lets you feel hot and cold, the taste of a lemon. The answers are the five sense organs, the five senses themselves and three tastes, and they cross at shared letters, so the sense and its body part support each other as students solve. Keep the word bank on for first grade, read the clues together as riddles, and press Make another to give each table its own layout.
Grades: 1st to 3rd grade. Best in: September, October.

How to use it: five ideas
- Riddle circle: read each clue aloud as a riddle and let the group whisper the answer before anyone writes it in.
- Match the pair: after solving, students draw a line from each body part (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin) to its sense (sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch).
- Sense walk: take the answers outside and let students find one thing for each sense in the schoolyard.
- Write a clue: students write their own clue for “loud” or “smooth” in their own words and swap with a neighbor.
- Table layouts: press Make another so each table has its own layout and the group beside them cannot copy.

Questions
Is this too hard for first grade?
With the word bank on and a partner reading the clues, first graders can do it. Delete the longest answers, such as hearing, from the box to make it a little shorter.
Why only three tastes?
Thirteen words fit best on a page, so the crossword has sweet, sour and salty. The word search and bingo cards add bitter, and you can add a line for it, with a clue, in the box.
Can I change the words and clues?
Yes. Each of the 13 lines is a word, a colon and its clue. Edit any of them, and the crossword is rebuilt with new numbers.
How do I save it as a PDF?
Press Print and choose “Save as PDF” as the printer. The puzzle is page one and the answer key is page two.
How do I get a different layout?
Press “Make another”. The same words and clues are placed in a new arrangement, so each table can have its own puzzle.
