About this set
Thirteen community helpers, each with a one-line clue about what the job does: the helper who puts out fires and rescues people, the one who grows the food we eat, the one who fixes leaky pipes, the leader of a town. The clues describe the work and never name the tools or the uniform, so students think about the job itself. The answers are the helpers a young child meets (firefighter, nurse, dentist, librarian, farmer, baker, pilot, mechanic), plus a few for older students (veterinarian, electrician, plumber, mayor, judge). Longer answers such as veterinarian and electrician are good tests for third and fourth grade.
Grades: 1st to 4th grade. Best in: September, October, May.

- Who works here? Students sort the answers by where each helper works: fire station, school, hospital, town hall or out on the road.
- Thank-you lines: each student picks a job from the puzzle and finishes the sentence “Thank you for helping our town by ___.”
- Write a clue: students write a clue for a helper they know (the bus driver, the lunch worker) and swap puzzles with a partner.
- Visitor questions: before a helper visits, students write one question for them using words from the crossword.

Questions
Does it use gender-neutral job names?
Yes. Every answer is a title that fits any worker (firefighter, mayor, pilot), and the clues never say he or she.
Can I add the helpers in our town?
Yes. Add a line with the job, a colon and its clue (Ferry captain: The person who steers a boat that carries people across the water) and the crossword rebuilds with it.
Can I change the words and clues?
Yes. Each of the 13 lines is a word, a colon and its clue. Edit any of them, and the crossword is rebuilt with new numbers.
How do I save it as a PDF?
Press Print and choose “Save as PDF” as the printer. The puzzle is page one and the answer key is page two.
How do I get a different layout?
Press “Make another”. The same words and clues are placed in a new arrangement, so each table can have its own puzzle.
