About this set
Summer is a season most children can talk about for an hour, and this list is built from what they tell you: the beach (sandcastle, seashell, towel, swimsuit, sailboat), the backyard (sprinkler, water balloon, flying disc, hammock), the cool treats (ice pop, ice cream, lemonade, watermelon), the trips (road trip, camping, tent, hiking, vacation) and the evenings (fireflies, campfire, s’mores). It also holds two words that sound like school, the summer solstice and summer reading, so a teacher can bring the learning into the game. It suits the last week of the year, summer school, a camp day or a library program.
Grades: Pre-K to 5th grade. Best in: May, June, July.
Summer plans: when a word is called, students who did or will do that thing hold up a hand, and one volunteer says where or when.
Solstice science: when “summer solstice” is called, explain that it is the day in June with the most hours of daylight, and ask why the Sun looks higher in summer.
Sun safety: when sunscreen, sunglasses or towel is called, the class names one way to stay safe and cool outside.
Memory write: the winner writes two sentences about a summer memory using the word that gave them bingo.
Camp day version: play outdoors with chalk-drawn cards or paper cards on clipboards, with water bottles for markers if it is hot.
Yes. The words are about the season, not the school year, so it works for the last week of school, summer school, camp and library programs. For the end of the year itself, see the end-of-the-school-year set.
Does it include travel that some families cannot afford?
The list has free summer things too: sprinkler, fireflies, picnic, kite, bicycle, summer reading. Delete vacation, road trip or any other word that you would rather not use, and the cards are rebuilt.
Can I change the words?
Yes. The 36 words are in the box above the cards. Delete, add or edit any line and the cards are rebuilt at once. Nothing is saved on our servers.
How do I call the game?
Press “Call the game”. Each press of the space bar tumbles the ball cage and pops out the next item in very large type, with the list of items already called beside it. Press C and type a card number to check a winner, P to change the win pattern, V to have each call read aloud, and F to fill the projector.
How do I save the cards as a PDF?
Press Print and choose “Save as PDF” as the printer. Each page can also be saved as a PNG picture from under its preview.
