About this sheet
A word wall works when children can find the word they need, and that begins with clear, alphabetical headers they can read from their seats. These twenty-six cards show each letter in capital and lowercase, in big type, with starter words beneath. The starter words come from the Dolch lists, the public-domain sight words, grouped by first letter, so a first-grade wall already has words on it on day one. A letter with no sight words, such as Q or X, prints with writing lines instead, so you can add your own as the year goes on. Cut the cards apart along the border, mount them on the wall in order, and add words on sticky notes or cards.
Grades: Pre-K to 3. Best in: August, September.
How to use it
- Leave all twenty-six letters in the box, or delete the ones you do not want. Turn off the starter words if you prefer blank cards.
- Print on card stock, cut the cards apart along the borders and mount them along the wall in alphabetical order, at children's eye level.
- Add new words on cards or sticky notes as you teach them, and take the starter words down if they are not words your class needs.
Five ideas for class
- Add a word to the wall only when you have taught it and used it in a lesson, so each word carries a memory with it.
- Choose five words a week for the wall, and play a game with them: say a word, and a student points to the letter it belongs under.
- Ask students to find a word on the wall during writing time, and tap it with a pointer before they use it in a sentence.
- Use a different color of paper for each letter group (A to F, G to L and so on) so a child can find a section from across the room.
- Let students add their own words after they have read them in a book, so the wall becomes theirs.

Questions
Where do the starter words come from?
From the Dolch lists, a public-domain list of 220 common sight words and 95 nouns, grouped by their first letter. You can turn them off for blank cards.
Can I print just some letters?
Yes. Delete the letters you do not need from the box. Print only the pages with the letters you want.
Is the word wall alphabetical or by sound?
Alphabetical. For sounds such as sh and ch, use the word wall sound headers, which have the same cards for digraphs.
How do I save it as a PDF?
Choose Print, then pick “Save as PDF” as the printer. Only the sheet prints: the page around it is hidden. You can also save a sheet as a PNG image under the preview.
Can I print it in black and white?
Yes. Switch to Black and white beside the sheet: fills turn white and lines turn black, so it saves ink and photocopies cleanly.
