About this sheet
Once a child knows the numbers to ten, the teen numbers are the next hurdle, and a double ten frame lets them see that fourteen is a full ten and four more. The two frames stack with a heavy line between them, so the first ten is plain to see and the extra counters in the second frame show the ones. The squares are the same size as on the single ten frame, so the children's counters and habits carry over. Use the frames for adding two numbers within twenty, for the make-ten strategy, in which one addend is broken to complete the first frame, and for subtraction. They print on card stock for centers and in a sleeve for a dry-erase set.
Grades: K, 1, 2. Best in: September, October, November, January.
How to use it
- Print on card stock, one page for each pair of children. Laminate the sheets, or slide them into clear sleeves.
- Say a teen number and ask the children to build it, filling the top frame completely and putting the rest in the lower frame.
- Ask them to say the number as ten and some more, and to write the number sentence, such as 10 + 6 = 16, on the line.
Five ideas for class
- Build eight in the top frame and seven in the bottom, then ask a child to move two counters up to make a ten. The facts of 8 + 7 become 10 + 5.
- Show a teen number for a moment and cover it, and ask how many. Seeing ten and some more is the foundation of place value.
- Use two colors to show the two addends of a sum, then discuss the different ways to combine them into twenty.
- Take counters away from a full double frame to show subtraction from twenty, and write the number sentence under each frame.
- Let children fill the frames and have a partner write the number from a glimpse, then swap roles.

Questions
What is the difference from the single ten frame?
The single ten frame supports numbers to ten. The double supports numbers to twenty, with the first ten made plain by the heavy line between the frames.
Can I print it six to a page?
The double frames are larger, so four fit on a page. For six small frames, use the single ten frame page.
How do they help with place value?
A full frame is a ten and the extra counters are the ones. Children meet the idea of ten and some more well before they write two-digit numbers.
How do I save it as a PDF?
Choose Print, then pick “Save as PDF” as the printer. Only the sheet prints: the page around it is hidden. You can also save a sheet as a PNG image under the preview.
Can I print it in black and white?
Yes. Switch to Black and white beside the sheet: fills turn white and lines turn black, so it saves ink and photocopies cleanly.
