About this set

Thanksgiving in the United States falls on the fourth Thursday of November, and most classes spend the week before it on food, family, thankfulness and the 1621 harvest feast at Plymouth, where the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people shared a meal. This list covers the foods children expect (turkey, stuffing, gravy, cranberries, pumpkin pie, rolls), the traditions (parade, football, the wishbone, a family table) and the ideas teachers want to discuss (gratitude, thankful, kindness, harvest). It also names the Mayflower, Plymouth and the Wampanoag, so the game can lead into the history without turning it into a costume story.

Grades: Pre-K to 5th grade. Best in: November.

How to play, and five ideas

  1. Gratitude round: when students cover a square, they say one thing they are thankful for that connects to the word.
  2. Feast planning: call only the food words and have students vote on which three they would put on a class menu.
  3. History link: when “Mayflower,” “Plymouth” or “Wampanoag” is called, pause and read a short, accurate passage about the 1621 harvest feast.
  4. Party version: print four cards to a page, cut them apart, and use candy corn or dried corn kernels as markers.
  5. Writing prompt: the winner writes three sentences about a family meal using words from their winning row.

Questions

Is the history accurate?

The list names the Mayflower, Plymouth and the Wampanoag, who shared the 1621 harvest feast with the English settlers. Use a trusted classroom source for the full story, since the cards only name the words.

Can I add my class’s own traditions?

Yes. Type them into the box and press Make another. Cards are rebuilt from whatever is in the list.

Can I change the words?

Yes. The 36 words are in the box above the cards. Delete, add or edit any line and the cards are rebuilt at once. Nothing is saved on our servers.

How do I call the game?

Press “Call the game”. Each press of the space bar tumbles the ball cage and pops out the next item in very large type, with the list of items already called beside it. Press C and type a card number to check a winner, P to change the win pattern, V to have each call read aloud, and F to fill the projector.

How do I save the cards as a PDF?

Press Print and choose “Save as PDF” as the printer. Each page can also be saved as a PNG picture from under its preview.
