Match up: terms and meanings from your list

A matching game for the board: terms down the left, their meanings shuffled down the right. Tap a term and then its meaning. Print it as a matching sheet or as cards to cut apart.

8 items (up to 40). Put a colon, a tab, a dash with spaces, an equals sign or an arrow between the term and its meaning.

How to use it

  1. Paste your list with one term and its meaning on each line, then choose how many go in a round, from four to eight.
  2. Press Play. Tap a term, then the meaning that goes with it, or press a number and then a letter on the keyboard.
  3. A right pair locks in with its own color and number. A wrong pair just shakes and you try again. Press N for the next round.
  4. Press Print for a matching sheet with an answer key, or for cards to cut apart and match at a table.

Ideas for class

  • Use it to open a vocabulary lesson: put ten new words up and let the class match them before you teach any of them.
  • Play it as a class, with each student taking a turn to come up and make one match.
  • Print the sheet for a quiet independent task, and keep the answer key to check it later.
  • Print the cards and put them in a bag for early finishers, one bag for each unit.
  • Mix in a few terms that share a meaning, such as two words for the same thing, and talk about why both fit.

Questions

What if two lines have the same meaning?

Both terms fit either card with that meaning, and the page accepts either match. That is handy for synonyms and for categories.

How many items does a round have?

You choose four to eight. A longer list is split into balanced rounds, so thirteen lines at six a round gives rounds of five, four and four, never a round of one.

Does a wrong match cost anything?

No. A wrong match shakes and is forgotten. The page counts mistakes at the end of the round so you can talk about them, but there are no points and no timer.

Is the printed sheet the same as the one on screen?

It is made from the same list and the same shuffle, so the sheet in your hand and the round on the board are the same. The answer key is a separate page at the end.
