About this set

Twenty-two words for the day the country thanks the men and women who have served in the armed forces. Students hunt for the branches (Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard), the signs of the day (flag, parade, salute, bugle, poppy, ceremony), the values it honors (honor, courage, duty, service, freedom) and the history word Armistice, the name the holiday had before 1954. The words are respectful and plain, name no conflicts, and are pitched at third through seventh grade. Longer words such as Armistice, ceremony and Coast Guard reward a careful reader, and the answer key is on page two.

Grades: 3rd to 7th grade. Best in: November.

How to use it: five ideas

  1. Before the puzzle: read a short, age-appropriate text about Veterans Day and have students underline the words they expect to find.
  2. Word meanings: students pick three words, look each up, and write the meaning in their own words.
  3. Thank-you card: after the puzzle, each student chooses two words from it and uses them in a note to a veteran.
  4. Interview prep: students write two questions for a visiting veteran using words from the puzzle (service, duty, courage).
  5. Branch research: students pair up, each takes one branch from the puzzle, and they share three facts on a class chart.

Questions

Why is Armistice in the puzzle?

Veterans Day was called Armistice Day until 1954. It marked the moment the fighting stopped in World War I, at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918. Delete the word from the box if your class has not learned it.

Is the puzzle suitable for a school with military families?

Yes. It uses plain, respectful words and names no battles or conflicts. Invite students to share about a relative’s service only if they want to.

Can I change the words or the difficulty?

Yes. Edit the 22 words in the box, choose Easy, Medium or Hard, pick a grid size from 8 to 25 and a shape, and add a secret message if you like. The puzzle rebuilds as you change it, and any word that cannot fit is listed.

Can we play it on the board?

Yes. Press “Play on the board”: the class finds words by dragging across them or tapping the first and last letters, each find plays a note, and H gives a hint. Press F to fill the projector.

How do I save it as a PDF?

Press Print and choose “Save as PDF” as the printer. The puzzle is page one and the answer key is page two.

How do I get a different layout?

Press “Make another”. The same words are placed in a new arrangement, which is handy when neighbors should not have the same puzzle.
