How we chose

We weighed these, most important first. The order is our judgement against them, not a score or a vote, and a different teacher could reasonably order it differently. Our own tool sits where those criteria put it; we built it after studying the others, so read its entry with that in mind.

  1. Free with no account. A sub can open it on a borrowed computer and use it right away, with nothing to sign up for.
  2. Several jobs on one screen. Tools that put a timer, a noise meter and a picker together rank above single-purpose pages.
  3. Clean on the projector. We note ads the maker mentions, since an ad on the big screen distracts a class.
  4. Fits a sub's day. Useful for transitions, quiet work, choosing who goes next or a calm read-aloud.

We took no money, free products or affiliate commissions for any place on this list, and no link here carries a tracking code. Every fact was read on the maker’s own page on October 30, 2026; prices carry that date because they change. See how we choose and the ad-free promise.

Questions

Can a substitute use these without an account?
The makers of Classroomscreen, MyClassScreen, Excalidraw and the Peabody Board say you can start with no login. Some schools block sites or the microphone, so ask the office or try the room's computer before class.
Do noise meters record the class?
Bouncy Balls and the Peabody Board use the computer's microphone to measure sound. Our board measures in the browser and never records or sends sound; for other tools, read the maker's privacy page, and ask the office if microphones are allowed.
Which one should a sub open first?
Open one board, such as Classroomscreen or MyClassScreen, with a timer and a name picker on it. Add a read-aloud tab for a calm moment and a review game for the end of the day.
