1. DecodableReads (TextProject)

TextProject

  • Best for free printable practice in K-2
  • Free

Short illustrated stories that practise common vowel patterns and high-frequency words, sorted into three levels called Turquoise, Coral and Pink Step. Each story opens as a PDF, and each level has a bundle you can download in one go. A scope and sequence is linked from the same page.

No charge and no sign-in shown on the page

Watch for It is a set of short PDF stories in three levels, so it supplements a phonics program rather than replacing a full bookroom.

2. UFLI Foundations Toolbox (decodable passages)

University of Florida Literacy Institute

  • Best for classes already using UFLI Foundations
  • Free

The Toolbox holds companion materials for each UFLI Foundations lesson: slide decks, decodable passages, homework sheets and games. UFLI describes Foundations as a program for core instruction in the primary grades or for intervention in any grade. The Toolbox also links to a Decodable Text Guide that points to commercial books by lesson.

The Toolbox resources are free; the lesson manual is sold separately

Watch for The passages follow UFLI's lesson order, so they fit best if you teach that scope and sequence, and the page says some free resources were still being built out.

3. Amplify CKLA Skills decodable readers

Amplify

  • Best for free grade-by-grade readers
  • Free

Amplify offers 20 student readers from its CKLA Skills strand, seven for kindergarten, seven for first grade and six for second grade, and calls them fully decodable. They are written to go with the CKLA program. A form on Amplify's page unlocks the free ebook downloads.

The ebooks are offered free through a sign-up form

Watch for You fill out a form to get the files, and the readers are written to go with Amplify's CKLA Skills lessons rather than a general phonics order.

4. Half-Pint Readers

Half-Pint Kids

  • Best for a free digital library plus print
  • Free plan, paid upgrades

A decodable series built on an explicit, step-by-step phonics sequence, grouped into Level A (sets 1 to 6, consonants and short vowels), Level B (sets 7 to 12, blends, digraphs and word endings) and Level C (sets 13 to 18, long vowels and more). The Digital Library is free to read online, and print books are sold on the publisher's site.

The free part: The online Digital Library is free to read; print books and Kindle ebooks are sold.

5. Pioneer Valley Books decodables

Pioneer Valley Books

  • Best for print sets that follow UFLI
  • Paid

Four decodable lines: Phonics Storybooks, MyCodables, InfoCodables (decodable text plus teacher-read facts) and QuestCodables for older readers. The publisher says its books are listed in UFLI's Decodable Text Guide, and its K-2 bundles for the UFLI sequence come with a free one-year teacher subscription to its Digital Reader.

Sets on the home page ranged from $32 to $800 depending on the set and quantity (as of 2026-10-27)

Watch for Sets are sold per series and quantity, so costs add up for a full classroom library, and the Digital Reader is an annual subscription.

  • Price varies

Early books are wordless and sound-search books that lead into duet books, then independent picture and chapter books. Print sets and a My Geodes digital version are sold.

Pricing on the maker's site; the page offers a sample request and sales contact

Watch for Sets are large (the K, 1 and 2 levels list 384 books each) and sold by quote, which suits a school buy more than a single classroom.

9. Dandelion Readers (Phonic Books)

Phonic Books

  • Best for a steady, sound-by-sound sequence
  • Paid

A UK range that introduces alphabet sounds, adjacent consonants, consonant digraphs and vowel digraphs in order. The publisher's shop lists it under decodable books and says it is an ideal resource for school years 1 to 3, with matching activity books sold separately.

Reading books were £20.00 each on the UK shop (as of 2026-10-27)

Watch for The page we read is the publisher's UK shop with prices in pounds, and it lists no digital edition for this series.

Also good

  • Bob Books: Very popular beginner sets in Pre-Reading and Stages 1 to 3; the publisher's home page calls them phonics-based and does not use the word decodable.
  • Little Learners Love Literacy: An Australian publisher of decodable books (Pip and Tim, The Wiz Kids) sequenced to its own phonics program; spelling and accent assumptions are Australian.

How we chose

We weighed these, most important first. The order is our judgement against them, not a score or a vote, and a different teacher could reasonably order it differently.

  1. Free or a price you can see. Free sources rank first, then publishers that show a price or a free digital option, then those that only quote.
  2. States its phonics sequence. The publisher's own page ties the books to a phonics order or says they are decodable, not just leveled.
  3. Clear grade or stage. The publisher says which grades or stages each set is for, so you can place a child without guessing.
  4. Ways to get the books. Printable files, print sets and a digital library all count, and so does a free sample.

We took no money, free products or affiliate commissions for any place on this list, and no link here carries a tracking code. Every fact was read on the maker’s own page on October 27, 2026; prices carry that date because they change. See how we choose and the ad-free promise.

Questions

What is a decodable book?
A decodable book is written mostly with the letter-sound patterns children have already been taught, so they can sound out the words instead of guessing. Check each series against the order you teach phonics in.
Are there free decodable books for kindergarten and first grade?
Yes. TextProject's DecodableReads are free PDFs, UFLI's Toolbox has free passages with its lessons, Amplify offers 20 free K-2 readers through a form, and Half-Pint Readers has a free online digital library.
Do I have to buy the books that match my phonics program?
Not always. Some publishers tie sets to one scope and sequence, for example Pioneer Valley Books for UFLI, so ask for a sample or a scope and sequence before you buy.
Can homeschool families use these?
Yes. The free sources above work at home, and Half-Pint Readers and Pioneer Valley Books both sell print books online. Several others sell by quote and are aimed at schools.
