Staffroom house rules
The Staffroom is on peabody.kids, a .kids address, and everything on a .kids address must be fine for a child to read, comments included. So the rules are strict, and a person reads every comment first.
The seven rules
- Write as if a student might read over your shoulder. Everything here must be fine for a child to see, because this site sits on peabody.kids.
- No names or identifying details of any child, family, colleague or school. Say “a second grader” or “a colleague”, never a name, a school, a town or a date that points to someone.
- No swearing. Masked or spelled-out swearing counts too, and a comment with it can’t be sent.
- Describe hard moments in general terms, never the details. “A student hurt another student” is enough. Moderators can’t publish details of injuries, abuse or violence.
- If you’re struggling, ask for help; don’t describe self-harm. Support lines are one tap away on every Staffroom page. Messages about hurting yourself are never published; a moderator reads them.
- A child at risk is a matter for your school’s safeguarding lead and the authorities, not a post. We can’t identify or help a child from a comment. Call your safeguarding lead, child protective services or Childhelp.
- No selling or promotion; links only to Peabody’s own pages. No stores, discount codes, social handles or outside links. Talk about the teaching, not a product you sell.
Why these rules
The .kids domain has rules of its own, set by the registry that runs it. Anyone can complain to the registry, and it can act against the whole of peabody.kids, the children’s site included. Each house rule keeps one of its rules:
| The .kids rule | Our house rule |
|---|---|
| Everything fine for under-18s; nothing obscene | Write as if a student might read over your shoulder; no swearing (1, 3) |
| No gross violence | Describe hard moments in general terms (4) |
| Nothing that encourages self-harm | Ask for help; don’t describe self-harm. Such messages are never published (5) |
| No promotion of drugs, alcohol or tobacco | Write as if a student might read over your shoulder (1) |
| No gambling, illegal content or copying others’ work | No selling or promotion; links to Peabody’s own pages only (7) |
| No personal information about anyone under 18 | No names or details of any child, family, colleague or school; 18 or older to post (2) |
Also
- No reviews of named teachers, schools or districts. Talk about the idea, not the person.
- No pictures or files. Words only.
- A child at risk is a matter for your school’s safeguarding lead and the authorities. We can’t help a child from a comment (6).
