Participation rubric: grades K–2, 3–5 and 6–8
This participation rubric scores how a student takes part in class and in discussion: being ready, sharing ideas, listening and responding, and asking questions. Speaking aloud is one way to take part; a written note, a partner talk or a small group counts too, so quiet students are not marked down for being quiet. Grades 3–5 and 6–8 use four levels with points; K–2 uses three levels in plain words. Print it, copy it into Google Docs, or open it in the rubric maker.

- Offer more than one way to share: speaking aloud, a sticky note, an exit slip, a partner or a small group. Each counts.
- As a self-check on Friday: students circle one cell per row and name one goal.
What to say to students
- There are many ways to take part: you can say it, write it, or tell a partner.
- Quiet is fine. I am looking for your ideas, not how loud or how often you talk.
- Being ready means having your materials and having done the reading.
