Class mode: what a teacher sees, what a family controls, what we keep

A child belongs to their family first. A class is a second circle: the teacher sees the child's practice and nothing else, and the family can take the child out at any time.

Who can run a class

A grown-up with a Peabody account whose email address is at their school. They pick their school from our list, and a person at Peabody checks each one by hand, against the school and the email address, before they can make a class. Personal addresses (Gmail, Outlook, iCloud and the like) aren't accepted, because they say nothing about a school.

How a child joins

A child who already has a Peabody account (their family's, or their own) opens My page, taps Join a class and types the class's six-letter code. They can try 10 codes an hour, so a code can't be guessed. A class holds up to 40 children, and a child can be in up to 3 classes.

A child whose family keeps their Peabody inside the family (the Keep inside our family switch) can't join a class until a grown-up turns that off.

Later, a teacher may also be able to make an account for a child who has none, on the teacher's own screen: a first name and four numbers the child picks, and no email. That has its own switch, which is off. A child made that way has a Peabody of their own that no other family can see or follow.

What the teacher sees

  • The child's first name, or a name the teacher gives them in the class (the family sees that name too).
  • Their grade and reading level, and when they joined.
  • Their practice on the Skill Map: for each step in numbers, words and World, whether they haven't started, are learning, have got it, or are done for good; and for the class's Focus, how many they got right this week.

What the teacher never sees

A child's stories, chats, posts, pets, games, buddies, family, surname, pen name, face, email or sign-in numbers. This isn't a promise the page keeps: the database itself gives a teacher only their own class's practice records, and only while class mode is on.

What the family controls

  • When a child joins a class, their grown-up sees a note on the grown-ups' page with the class, the teacher and the school.
  • Any grown-up of the family can take the child out of a class at any time, from the child's settings. The child can leave too.
  • A family's own Focus for their child comes before the class's.
  • The family's time limits and switches always apply.

What we keep, and for how long

For a class: its name, grade, school, code, the Focus skills and the sets the teacher gave it, and a Live game's code for 3 hours. For each child in it: which class, when they joined, how, and the name the teacher gave them. When a child leaves, is taken out, or the class is deleted, those rows are deleted at once. The child's practice belongs to the child's own account, as it did before they joined, and leaves with nothing.

For a teacher: their account, the school they picked, the name their class sees, their email's domain, and our decision. Nothing is sold, and there are no ads.

When it opens

Class mode opens when Peabody turns it on for everyone. Until then no child can join a class, and these pages ask our server for nothing.
